The 6 Pillars of Persuasion: How I Use Them to Generate Millions for Local Service Businesses
Marketing, at its core, is about influencing decisions. One of the most impactful books I’ve ever read is Influence by Robert Cialdini, which completely changed how I approach marketing.
In the book, Cialdini outlines “The 6 Pillars of Persuasion.” These principles, backed by extensive research and data, are so powerful that we fall victim to them even when we’re aware of their influence. Here’s a breakdown of each pillar and how I’ve used them to drive millions of dollars in revenue for local service businesses.
1. Reciprocity
Definition: People feel compelled to return a favor or act of kindness.
How I use it:
The beauty of reciprocity is that the return doesn’t have to be proportional. For example, if you run a gym, offering trial participants a free t-shirt and smoothie creates a sense of obligation. When it’s time to present your membership pricing, they’re far more likely to convert.
Takeaway: Always provide value first before asking for something in return.
2. Commitment and Consistency
Definition: People prefer to remain consistent with their past actions or commitments.
How I use it:
Start by asking for a small commitment, like signing up for a free newsletter. Once they’ve engaged, they’re more likely to commit to a paid subscription. For instance, my newsletter offers marketing and funnel-building tips for local businesses. Readers are naturally inclined to explore further by seeing what else I have to offer.
Takeaway: Leverage small, initial actions to build momentum toward bigger commitments.
Definition: People look to others’ actions to determine what’s correct, especially in uncertain situations.
How I use it:
Testimonials, reviews, and stats build trust. For example, showcasing how many people have purchased a product or benefited from a service reinforces credibility. Numbers that highlight trust among peers are incredibly persuasive. A fun example is how celebrities can basically date anyone. (They have lots of social proof)
Takeaway: Use customer testimonials, case studies, and statistics to demonstrate credibility and build trust.
Definition: People trust and follow experts or authoritative figures.
How I use it:
If you’ve worked with notable companies or individuals, or hold certifications or degrees, highlight them in your marketing. These credentials position you as an expert, increasing trust and authority in your field.
Takeaway: Build credibility by showcasing your expertise and achievements.
5. Liking
Definition: People are more easily influenced by those they like or feel connected to.
How I use it:
Relatable stories, shared values, and representation matter. For example, while working with a business serving primarily African American customers, we featured African American individuals in ads and testimonials to create familiarity and connection.
Takeaway: Build rapport and relatability to foster genuine connections with your audience.
6. Scarcity
Definition: People value things more when they perceive them as rare or limited.
How I use it:
In my opinion this is the most powerful of all. People react much more strongly toward negative emotion… Scarcity works best when tied to both time and availability. For example, offers limited to a specific number of spots or timeframes create urgency. Luxury brands like Rolex master this by limiting production and availability, increasing perceived value.
Takeaway: Use time-based or quantity-based limits to create urgency and drive action.
By applying these six principles ethically, you can significantly boost conversions and sales while delivering real value to customers. These strategies work because they align with fundamental human psychology.
